La Fuente de Cibeles se tiñará de verde el 16 de marzo con motivo de la festividad irlandesa de San Patricio, el día 17 de marzo. Por su parte, el municipio de Moraira, en la Costa Blanca alicantina, también se sumará a esta iniciativa durante el fin de semana del 16-18 de marzo e iluminará de verde su castillo y su plaza mayor, coincidiendo con la celebración del festival de música de St Patrick’s Day. ¡Y la ciudad de Salamanca va a celebrar el Día de San Patricio también! Gracias al alcalde de Salamanca, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, la Plaza Mayor se iluminará de verde la noche del 17 de marzo.

El 17 de marzo es un día muy especial para Irlanda y todos los irlandeses que residen en la capital. Ese día se celebró San Patricio, la fiesta nacional de Irlanda, y Madrid ha querido aportar su grano de arena. Por ello y gracias al Ayuntamiento de Madrid, la Fuente de Cibeles se teñirá de verde durante la noche del 16 de marzo para celebrar el día más importante de la Isla Esmeralda. Madrid forma parte de esta iniciativa “verde” que iluminará algunos de los principales monumentos de todo el mundo, entre ellos el London Eye, el Empire State Building, el Burj Al Arab en Dubai, Table Mountain en Sudáfrica el Sky Tower en Auckland y las Cataratas del Niágara en Canadá.

El fenómeno mundial en que se ha convertido el día de San Patricio es un logro extraordinario para una isla con una población de tan sólo seis millones de habitantes y es un testamento de la influencia y popularidad que los irlandeses tienen más allá de sus fronteras.

Once, twice, thrice.

Once, twice, thrice.

Es más normal en ingles decir "once" que "one time" y "twice" en lugar de "two times". Aunque la palabra "thrice" existe, se suele reservar para contextos poéticos. Al hablar usamos "three times". "Once" se pronuncia "uáans" y "twice" "tuais".

Sólo he saltado en paracaídas una vez.	I've only parachuted out of a plane once.
Él hizo y perdió una fortuna dos veces.	He's made and lost a fortune twice.
Se bañaron en el mar dos o tres veces el año pasado.	They swam in the sea two or three times last year. ("Twice" or "three times" no se puede decir).
He comido fuera siete u ocho veces este mes.	I've eaten out seven or eight times this month.
Creo que he comido eso una o dos vecesantes.	I think I've eaten that once or twice before.

Para decir que hemos hecho algo una vez es muy común colocar "once" entre el sujeto y el verbo (con verbos no auxiliares) y después del verbo (con verbos auxiliares).

Una vez conocí al Presidente Jimmy Carter.	I once met President Jimmy Carter.
Una vez ella actuó ante 10.000 personas.	She once performed in front of 10,000 people.
Una vez pasaron la noche al borde de un acantilado.	They once spent the night on the edge of a cliff.
Una vez perdí mi cartera en una playa.	I once lost my wallet on a beach.
Una vez me lesioné en un accidente de coche.	I was once injured in a car accident.

The Past Continuous

Empleamos el pasado continuo para describir algo que estaba sucediendo cuando otra cosa ocurrió. Se forma con el pasado simple del verbo "to be" más el gerundio (was / were + verbo + ing).

Estaba viendo la televisión cuando llamaste.	I was watching television when you called.
Ella estaba mirando su reloj cuando la bomba estalló.	She was looking at her watch when the bomb went off.
Estaban contándole un cuento de hadas cuando su madre llegó.	They were telling him a fairy tale when his mother arrived.
Estábamos escuchando el sermón cuando el cura se desmayó.	We were listening to the sermon when the priest collapsed.
John estaba intentando matar una mosca cuando se cayó del taburete.	John was trying to swat a fly when he fell off the stool.

Ahora practicaremos el interrogativo. No olvides que hay que invertir el sujeto y el verbo "to be".

¿Qué estabas haciendo cuando atacaron la embajada?	What were you doing when the embassy was attacked?
¿Adónde ibas cuando sufriste el accidente?	Where were you going when you had the accident?
¿Qué estabas diciendo antes de que te interrumpiera?	What were you saying before I interrupted you?
¿A qué velocidad iba ella cuando perdió el control del vehículo?	What speed was she doing when she lost control of the vehicle?
¿Estabas esquiando cuando te rompiste la pierna?	Were you skiing when you broke your leg?
